SAP SE is organising the ongoing Africa Code Week across 17 African countries to spread digital literacy in the continent

The initiative is a ten-day event that began on 1 October and will go on till 10 October, and includes hundreds of free coding workshops and online sessions aimed at children and youth aged between eight and 24 years. The countries being covered are Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Tunisia and Uganda.

“In the next 10 years, today’s youth will determine whether businesses win or lose the game,” said Franck Cohen, president for Europe, Middle East and Africa at SAP. “These young Africans are pushing businesses to innovate, to do things simpler, faster, smarter and more sustainably, in ways that will ultimately change the world. If we equip young people with the best technology, give them skills that make them relevant to the job market and empower them to be bold, we’ll watch the next generation do incredible things.”

SAP is offering free online courses via its openSAP platform, and 18-24 year old students are learning technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. An event partner, AMPION, is sending buses to tour Rwanda and the Western Cape in South Africa so that children in rural areas can be a part of the event. Google Inc. is also involved in Africa Code Week, by supporting local organisers of computer science and coding activities across the continent.

SAP already invests in the SAP Skills for Africa programme, which is aimed at providing IT skills to recent university graduates.
