p>The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisations (CTO) 6th Forum, was opened to a ninety-nine percent attendance by Commonwealth countries and some European and Middle Eastern countries on·Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 at the Southern·Sun·Grayston Hotel, Sandton in Johannesburg, South Africa.

CTO-logo-144x97Addressing Africa’s progress towards a successful Digital Migration, the conference invited profound interest and provided a valuable platform for attending delegates to engage, debate and discuss with a wider network of ICT experts at an international level.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman for the occasion, Mr. Alan Downie, Senior Broadcast Engineering Consultant of CBA, illustrated with the use of an analogy of climate change, the opportunity for digital migration change in Africa.  He pointed out that digital migration in Africa in the last few years has been slow and faltered in some cases but with the ‘weather clearing’ towards 2015, the continent is in a position to move faster and more seriously in the right direction. It was his hope that the Forum would serve as an opportunity for presenters to give good pointers to assist emerging countries in their quest to successfully migrate.

The CTO Forum is expected to benefit various country policy makers and regulators to assess and benchmark progress made in the emerging environment of DTT implementation.

It is hopeful that the organiser’s realistic vision to “deepen, expand and diversify the partnerships between governments, businesses and other organizations to reduce global poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for ICT”, shall be well enhanced by this Forum.

The conference will focus on key areas that include Policy and Regulation on the Digital Broadcasting Switchover, Funding the migration, Finding and deploying appropriate technologies, Building capacity for the migration and the Digital Dividend: Seeing beyond 2015.

The Forum is also a reminder that the CTO, with its strength in its wide resource pool of telecom/ICT professionals, supplemented by its rich network of inter-governmental relationships in policy and regulation, across the world, is uniquely positioned to offer exceptional services on a cost-effective basis where necessary.
