Zambia’s biggest mobile phone operator Airtel to spend more than US$80mn on upgrading and expanding its base station infrastructure

The company stated it expects to complete the upgrade of its sites by the end of the year, seeking to boost the quality of calls and Internet on its network.

Airtel head of corporate communication, Yuyo Kambikambi, stated 58 new 3G sites are also planned for construction.

“So far there are 58 new 3G sites that are meant to give the fastest internet speed. We expect to finish upgrading more than 242 sites by the end of this year,” said Kambikambi.

“The upgrade and expansion exercise is expected to cost the company more than US$80mn,” added Kambikambi.

Airtel customers have been complaining about the company’s poor network over the past few weeks, following the upgrade of its older sites, it said.

Airtel managing director, Charity Lumpa, said Airtel seeks to give its clients a sustainable experience for their calls and access to the Internet.

Lumpa acknowledged Airtel’s partners for their continued patronage and understanding.
