Telecommunications companies Bharti Airtel and MTN will work in partnership to provide mobile money transfer services in Côte dIvoire and Burkino Faso

The new agreement is expected to allow Mobile Money customers of MTN Côte d'Ivoire and Airtel in Burkina Faso to transfer money between the countries.

“The landmark partnership will enable Mobile Money customers of MTN Ivory Coast and Airtel in Burkina Faso to easily transfer money between the neighbouring countries," Bharti Airtel stated.

“Until now, moving money between the two countries was mired by high fees, high usage of informal channels and a lack of proximity to withdraw money,” the company added.

MTN’s mobile money facility has almost 15mn registered users across 14 countries, the statement revealed.

The Central Bank of West African States has backed MTN and Bharti Airtel in launching the new service to customers.

“MTN has reached a great level of adoption of Mobile Money in Ivory Coast, and Airtel has done the same in Burkina Faso. With a sizeable community of Burkinabe working in Ivory Coast and sending money back to their home country, the partnership will greatly enhance the Mobile Money service for customers in both countries," said Pieter Verkade, MTN Group chief commercial officer.
