An independent assessment report carried out by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) found that MTN Uganda was the leading network operator in the country for the period between February and June 2014

The company recently marked 10 million subscribers with a cumulative investment in Uganda exceeding US$650mn since it entered the country’s telecommunication market in 1998.

The Quality of Service (QoS) performance report by UCC on the five operational Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication networks operating in Uganda covered Airtel Uganda, MTN Uganda, Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL), Orange Uganda and Warid Telecom Uganda.

The regulatory body said that the networks were evaluated against key performance indicators – which included less than two per cent for dropped call rate, less than two per cent for blocked call rate and greater than or equal to 98 per cent for successful call rate – with MTN Uganda scoring well in each of the parameters.

The regulatory body noted, however, that the networks have reported rampant vandalism of communication infrastructure in form of fibre cable cuts, and battery and fuel thefts had affecting performance, with other negative factors including unstable power and insufficient power back up systems.

The company's new CEO, Brian Gouldie, said of the report, “This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the results of our investment programme and network optimisation focus over the last few months.

“What is particularly pleasing is that we are the clear leader in major cities including Jinja, Mbale, Kasese, Kabale, Masaka and Mbarara,” he added.

The company said its investments in 2013 exceeded US$52.8mn and in 2014 investments would total US$60mn, with the funds going towards network roll out and upgrades, as well as a number of other infrastructure developments to support its subscriber growth.
