A new clean energy alternative for powering USB devices, Intelligent Energys Upp™ personal energy device, has been launched internationally, with Africa forming a key target market

Intelligent Energy, an international power technology company, has confirmed that the Upp device has achieved IEC 62282-6-100 micro fuel cell technology certification and ISO 16111:2008, allowing the product to be distributed internationally.

Upp builds on the company’s innovative proprietary fuel cell technology and can charge and power USB-compatible mobile electronic devices, such as smartphones, feature phones, eReaders, tablets, portable gaming consoles and digital cameras, as fast as the mains.

Upp typically provides five charges to even the most power-hungry smartphones.

Amar Samra, managing director of consumer electronics at Intelligent Energy, commented on the pent-up demand across Africa for the extended uptime of portable devices.

"This year, we have carried out successful consumer field deployments in the region and are now in the process of expanding and recruiting further mobile partners worldwide. We believe Upp is a real game changer for Africa," he said.

“Batteries need help: their capabilities haven’t kept pace with innovation in smart connected portable devices.

"Consumers need a reliable source of personal and portable energy, and Upp gives you that critical uptime when you really need it.”

The Upp fuel cell takes hydrogen provided by the Upp cartridge and combines it with air to produce clean electricity on demand.

Users simply need to connect the fuel cell to a replaceable cartridge to obtain instant energy for their devices.

The free Upp mobile app (available from Apple's App Store and from Google Play) communicates with the Upp product and includes a number of proprietary features such as smart charging, eco mode and a function to locate the nearest local Upp cartridge exchange outlet via GPS.

“Upp packages decades of industry leading research and delivers feature-rich capabilities that now - with industry certification - makes it an ideal mobile companion product for the consumer on the go,” said Samra.

Julian Hughes, group corporate development director at Intelligent Energy added, “It’s a really exciting time for Upp and our partners in the emerging and developed markets."
