MTN Zambia reduces roaming costs for customers travelling abroad

MTN Screen newMTN Zambia and Kirusa, a communication solutions provider, have announced the launch of new and innovative roaming service for customers travelling outside Zambia for both business and pleasure

The company stated that the customers can download the Kirusa’s InstaVoice ReachMe app from Google Play, the Apple Store, and through the company’s website.

The company added that the advantages of this app include:

- A drastic reduction in the cost of making and receiving calls while a customer is outside Zambia

-The ability to use their MTN Zambia number anywhere in the world, even if the operator has no roaming partners.

-The opportunity to buy virtual numbers for the US, UK, Canada, and France (+1, +33 and +44) for just US$1 a month, with additional countries to follow soon.

These numbers can be used alongside a person’s existing mobile number(s) and activated instantly with no liaison with an operator required. Up to ten numbers can be linked to a person or business with the numbers able to be used on any device. This eliminates the need to carry additional phones to use multiple phone numbers.

Kirusa’s app works by converting regular phone calls to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls, allowing users to make or receive such calls within the app. This is useful when a mobile user is roaming, out of network coverage or in flight mode, but with an active data connection. The data can be from a local sim card, roaming data or a Wi-Fi network.

If a ReachMe call goes unanswered, MTN Zambia customers will receive a missed call alert or voicemail, which can be accessed in the app.

The crucial differentiator for OTT apps such as WhatsApp is that ReachMe does not require both the caller and the recipient to connect to the app.

Seun Soladoye, acting chief marketing officer of MTN Zambia, said, “ReachMe is a refreshing innovation that solves a pain point for our frequent flyer audience. This app is an outcome of totally re-thinking roaming and, by clever integration with the cloud, drastically minimises our costs thereby allowing us to roll out attractive roaming packages.”

Inderpal Singh Mumick, founder and CEO of Kirusa, commented, “Customers demand higher value, more convenience and lower roaming rates when travelling. ReachMe delivers on this promise with the number one network in Zambia-MTN Zambia. I’m delighted that MTN Zambia believes in the potential of voice-over-data solutions, in the context of a world that is increasingly getting connected over the cloud.”
