China Central Television (CCTV) has begun broadcasting a live African hour-long daily flagship show, Africa Live, in an attempt to boost Sino-African relations
Nairobi-based Africa Live has a general news presentation format featuring stories from across the continent and was CCTV’s first regional bureau to produce and broadcast its own hour-long news programme.
Talking to AFP, CCTV managing editor Pang Xinhua said, “We want to keep a balance. The show will not only talk about war, disease or poverty, but will also focus on economic development.”
Kenya vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka described the development as a chance to “present a new image of the continent” and end the global media trend of portraying Africa as “the continent of endless calamities”.
CCTV Africa chief Song Jianing added, “We opened this bureau in order to be able to tell the real Africa story, the real story of China and the real story of Sino-African relations.”
