Interconnect Nigeria (ICN) has announced it has upgraded the switches it uses to transfer voice traffic
The interconnect exchange carrier is now using second generation VoIP switches from World Telecom Labs (WTL) to transfer traffic between its own VoIP network and Nigeria’s various cellular networks.
According to WTL, the new switches come with a number of benefits, including a larger capacity resulting from unique compression techniques which allow for a higher density of calls using the same bandwidth.
The company said the switches also provide greater flexibility by making it easier to increase or reduce capacity in line with demand, while simultaneously cutting costs in a country where transferring traffic between Lagos and Abuja was previously more expensive than doing the same between Lagos and London.
ICN chairman Admiral A.A. Madueke said, “With WTL’s help, ICN is improving our nation’s telecoms infrastructure which is, of course, vital to our economic development.
“We will continue to work with high-quality vendors like WTL so we can continue to provide a fast and reliable service to our customers.”
WTL said more than three billion minutes have already passed through the new VoIP links so far.
