Google has commenced accepting applications for the 8th edition of its Accelerator Africa program, highlighting the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in addressing crucial challenges and opening up new avenues across the continent

The Accelerator Africa program is a three-month virtual initiative that provides African startups with mentorship, technical resources, and access to a global network of experts and investors, all without the need for equity. Since its establishment in 2018, the program has supported 106 startups from 17 African countries. These startups have collectively raised over US$263mn and generated more than 2,800 direct jobs.

“We’re excited to support the next generation of African AI pioneers through the Google for Startups Accelerator, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to build successful, impactful businesses,” said Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of startups ecosystem, Africa at Google.

"Africa’s tech ecosystem is a hotbed of innovation, and AI has the potential to be a transformative force across various sectors.”

The 8th program class, set to run from June to September 2024, will incorporate up to US$350,000 in Google Cloud credits, individualised guidance from Google AI specialists, experienced entrepreneurs, and industry figures, along with comprehensive training on AI/ML development, product strategy, and expansion.

Additional perks include introductions to potential investors, collaborators, and clients, as well as a supportive network of fellow founders grappling with similar challenges and opportunities.

Applications are being accepted from 29 April to 20 May 2024, and can be submitted online at g.co/AcceleratorAfrica. Eligible startups must be situated in Africa or developing Africa-focused solutions and should be leveraging AI/ML in a transformative manner.
