Telecommunications and Internet service provider Zamtel has recorded an unprecedented growth in the number of its active customers to more than one million this year from less than 500,000 in 2012

The recent introduction of new products and services introduced by the telecoms company has driven Zamtel's mobile sector to expand, the company said.

According to the company’s chief executive officer Mupanga Mwanakatwe, the Zamtel introduced a new generation network (NGN) on public switched telephone network (PSTN) for high voice and data quality, a move that has attracted a number of subscribers.

Zamtel also built a 3G network, which has enabled customers in the country to use high-speed mobile data services, it revealed.

"Last year, what we had in terms of customer base was less than 500,000. Now our active subscriber base is more than 1.5mn. Other services that gave Zamtel a competitive edge include mobile television, video calling, among others," Mwanakatwe said at the launch of the centenary celebrations in Lusaka on 27 September 2013.
