Airtel Tanzania has launched an app that allows its subscribers to access local and international television channels on their handsets

The telecommunications firm stated that subscribers will be able to access at least 8 local and international networks through the application.

Favourite shows, videos and movies will now be available on demand through mobile phones, according to Airtel.

“The service is designed to suit customer needs to access to information on their fingertips. Customers will have a choice on their preferred plan-whether daily, weekly or monthly”, observed Jackson Mmbando, Airtel Tanzania public relations manager.

Most Tanzanians watch news at home and can now consume instant news from the local and the international scene, Mmbando said.

Currently, Airtel Tanzania is the second largest mobile services company with 29 per cent of its 33.18mn subscribers in Tanzania.

Vodacom has 37 per cent of the market share, which according to the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has room to grow especially in rural areas.

Currently, Tanzania has a mobile penetration of about 67 per cent, according to the World Bank.

Value added services such as the TV streaming have become the new battlefields to retain agile subscribers especially the educated, urban based professionals.

Other operators include Tigo, Zantel, Sasatel and Benson Informatics.
