Telecom giant Ericsson has released statistics that reveal mobile phone subscriptions in Africa reached 781mn in Q2 2013
The figures from Ericsson, which is planning to further expand its Africa's network services, reveal that Africa’s mobile subscriptions are expected to continue to rise.
According to Ericsson’s head of strategic marketing and intelligence, Shiletsi Makhofane, Nigeria contributed four million in terms of net additions.
Africa was ranked third after Asia Pacific and China, which currently have 1.28bn and 1.17bn mobile subscriptions respectively, Makhofane said.
Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, India, Middle East, Latin America and North America added one million, two million, eight million, six million and four million new customers respectively in Q2, he added.
Global mobile subscription is expected to rise six per cent from 2012 to 2018 to nine billion, higher than the present world population of seven billion.
