South African mobile supplier Mobicel has released a new smartphone in its home market this week

Marketed as ‘one of the world’s slimmest devices’, Mobicel Air is just 5.1mm thick and weighs around 97 grams.

The device runs on Android 4.4 KitKat – which is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core processor – and comes equipped with an 8MP rear and a 5MP front auto-focus camera complete with HD video recorder.

According to IT News Africa, Mobicel CEO Ridhwan Khan said at the launch, “As with all its products, Mobicel put the Air through the paces to make sure it would stand up to daily use. Just some of Mobicel’s standard tests include drop, anti-bending, humidity, battery life, reception, call quality, video playback and mobile web tests.”

“We wouldn’t compromise on anything,” he continued. “Everything we do is about delivering an amazing user experience, and the Air is no exception. It’s fast, it’s feature-rich, and it’s affordable.”

The smartphone also features a 4.8″ Super AMOLED touchscreen, and is available in South Africa for around US$295.
