Mobile penetration in Ghana has continued to rise in early 2015, figures have revealed

A report by the National Communication Authority (NCA) reported an increase of 1.4 per cent in the overall number of mobile subscriptions in January 2015 when compared to the total of 30.36mn for the previous month.

The increase took the total to 30.78mn for the first month of 2015, with the mobile penetration rate now standing at 108.48 per cent, after crossing the 100 per cent mark in late 2012.

Most of the major mobile companies in the West African country saw their subscriber bases rise in line with the national trend.

Tigo saw its subscriber base increase to 4.2mn from 4.13mn with its market share increasing to 14.28 per cent, as did Airtel, whose customer numbers rose to 3.75mn from 3.73mn, along with its market share which reached 12.35 per cent.

MTN’s subscriber base rose to 13.94mn from 13.85mn, with the company’s market share hitting 45.6 per cent, while the NAC’s report showed Vodafone’s market share decreased to 21.97 per cent despite an increase in its subscriber base to 7.18mn from 7.07mn.

The only notable exception was Glo, whose subscriber numbers dropped to 1.44mn from 1.45mn, although the company’s market share increased to 5.17 per cent.
