MTN Nigeria has announced a partnership with France-based Alcatel-Lucent to deploy 100G fibre-optic network in Nigeria

Alcatel-Lucent said in a statement that the company is supporting MTN Nigeria’s rapid growth in the mobile sector by building a 100G fibre-optic network using Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform.

The PSS platform is a multi-reach photonic platform to provide a single-carrier for 100G network technology. It is built on the zero-touch photonics approach, which enables easier operations to reduce costs.

“Our company realised we needed to upgrade our network to meet customer expectations for ultra-broadband connectivity," said Lynda Saint-Nwafor, chief technology officer of MTN Nigeria.

"We wanted a state of the art solution that met three main criteria — increased network reliability, a high degree of scalability to prepare the network for 400G and beyond, and preservation of our existing 10G investment. Alcatel-Lucent’s demonstrations showed that they could meet all of our criteria and we look forward to deploying the network overlay in 2014,” added Saint-Nwafor.

MTN Nigeria, a subsidiary of Dubai-based MTN Group, has more than 58mn subscribers. The company’s network covers 88.8 per cent of the country’s land mass, providing 86.2 per cent of the population access to mobile services.
