MTN Uganda has partnered with Umeme, the countrys retail power distributor, to enable consumers to pay their electricity bills using mobile money

The service is expected to fuel the higher penetration of cashless transactions and contribute greatly to the country’s economy.

The instant payment solution, Touch Pay Solutions, was recently unveiled by Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the minister of information and communications technology.

Payments can be made through MTN Uganda and nine partner banks throughout the country.

Customers can pay bills at any hour of the day or night and avoid disconnections.

Dr Rugunda said Touch Pay Solutions was a result of a partnership that would improve service delivery to a wide range of customers.

“I'm extremely pleased that a utility company that is at the core of our economic development has reached out to other companies, driving our economy to find the common good and these partnerships have to be celebrated,” he said.

Mazen Mroue, CEO of MTN Uganda, added, “The value added service will improve their lives by ensuring quick and efficient utility bill payments.

“We currently have a total of three million mobile money subscribers, which is a great opportunity for Umeme to leverage and expand the Touch Pay service to these customers.”
