MTN Uganda is set to see its growth rise by 10 to 12 per cent this year, according to the company’s chief executive, Mazen Mroue revealed

Seven telecom companies operate in Uganda, which has a population of 34.5mn people recorded by the industry regulator, Uganda Communications Commission.

“In 2014, we have an aggressive plan … to increase our 3G and 4G sites coverage across the country to be able to continue accommodating the increased demand for internet access,” MTN chief executive officer Mazen Mroué said.

Mazen Mroue stated that the Ugandan unit is set to spend US$72.4mn in 2014 to expand its high-speed internet infrastructure.

Mobile penetration in the Ugandan market is reported to be around 44 per cent and offers room for mobile providers to expand quickly, although competition has encouraged some telcom companies to sell up.

MTN Uganda’s Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) dropped from US$6 to around US$4 after facing stiff competition from other mobile companies.

“The market could not support more than three operators. This market is quite good … to accommodate two operators,” Mroué added.

“More than three and it will be a complete loss.”
