Nigerian telecoms operators, MTN, Glo, Etisalat and Airtel, have paid a total of US$8mn in fines to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)

Nigeria's four major operators paid the fines between June 2012 and March this year, according to the Daily Trust newspaper.

The fines were imposed for breaking rules governing promotional offers and lotteries as well as for offering services that were not up to standard.

New NCC regulatory guidelines have outlined fines for operators ranging from $6,300 to $32,000 per violation. In severe instances operators may even have their licence revoked by the government.
