The company designs, manufactures and markets unique ‘Smart Wi-Fi’ systems for broadband operators and enterprises based on patented technology that extends signal range, automatically adapts to changes in the wireless environment to provide more reliable connectivity and consistent performance.

“The opening of our office and really our official launch into the South African market will be a pivotal milestone for the Ruckus Wireless brand as it will help fuel further awareness of our internationally acknowledged products and services,” said Michael Fletcher, Sales Director for Ruckus Wireless, Sub-Saharan Africa.  “It will also allow us to expand on our strategy to establish a ‘footprint’ across the emerging African region, which has shown strong growth globally in terms of IT competitiveness.”

Competitive solutions

While Wi-Fi is the preferred method for data distribution within the home, conventional Wi-Fi technology has, until now, been unable to provide the reliable and quality transmission essential to support all three traffic types concurrently.  The Ruckus system is the only system to deliver all the value of extended Wi-Fi range, increased capacity and reliable video quality using any standard Wi-Fi chipset.  Competitive solutions require new, more costly chips, proprietary equipment at both end of the connection without the ability to ensure reliable delivery of delay-sensitive multimedia traffic.

“A growing number of service providers are bundling IP voice, video and data services, commonly referred to as the ‘triple play’, over a single broadband connection,” continued Fletcher.  However, distributing IP multimedia traffic within the home has been a problem, requiring costly and cumbersome cabling between the broadband modem and the receiving device such as an IP set-top-box or a media adapter.  With Ruckus Wireless systems services can now extend beyond the customer’s broadband modem to all corners of the business or home.  Because Ruckus Wireless multimedia products are subscriber installable, requiring no complex wiring or configuration, triple-play service providers can significantly reduce the cabling installation costs associated with traditional service ‘truck rolls’ while accelerating and simplifying the deployment of converged multimedia services.”

Traffic inspection

New ground-breaking technology, developed by Ruckus, uses a smart antenna scheme along with sophisticated traffic inspection, QoS (Quality of Service) and reliable multicast software to send and receive wireless signals, ensuring the highest quality wireless transmissions for video, voice and data.  This means that consumers now have the freedom to put phones, computers and audio/visual equipment anywhere within the home without network cabling – effectively eliminating installation inconvenience, wiring costs and unsightly display of cables and cords.  Additionally, Wi-Fi users can now overcome environmental challenges such as interference from surrounding wireless devices and networks, or bandwidth contention from concurrent applications such as email downloads and Web surfing, to receive uninterrupted transmission of delay-sensitive media traffic in all quarters of the home.

“Wi-Fi has been designed for data, not video or voice,” adds Fletcher.  “Ruckus Wireless has developed the first technology to truly solve the last 25-meter problem of reliably and cost-effectively transmitting multimedia content over the air. Now consumers and providers can reap the benefits of emerging new broadband services that have been hampered by in-home cabling and service installation problems.”

Reliability

“Smartphone users everywhere are experiencing the pain of over-tapped networks.  Until now, Wi-Fi has been used primarily as a technology of convenience and not a key part of the cellular infrastructure.  We’re changing all that with new Wi-Fi technology that gives mobile operators the carrier-class reliability that has long eluded them.”

“We’ve been listening to our customers and partners and the next logical step is opening a direct presence in South Africa. This will enable Ruckus Wireless to get that much closer to each of our local customers and business partners.  I am certain that we are positioned to do great things for the local market in the years ahead,” concludes Fletcher.
