South African telecommunications operator Telkom has sold its Mauritius subsidiary, iWayAfrica to Gondwana International Networks

According to Ventures Africa, Telkom chief executive officer, Sipho Maseko, said exiting this business would help the operator concentrate more on its core fixed-line and mobile operations in South Africa.

Maseko admitted that Telkom had struggled to drive growth and profitability at iWayAfrica since the business was acquired in 2007. By 2012, Telkom executives were convinced that the Mauritius business had to be sold to minimise losses.

Telkom did not reveal any financial details of the transaction.

iWayAfrica currently has operations spanning across Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana. The company offers wireless and VSAT solutions to businesses and individuals.

Gondwana International Networks chief executive officer, Mathew Welthagen, said, “We view this acquisition as a long term investment and will continue investing in growing the business. The iWayAfrica business can help drive growth in ISP markets across Africa.”

Gondwana said it planned on turning iWayAfrica profitable by focussing on skilled resources within specific territories in the short term.
