Tanzanian mobile operator Zantel Tanzania has announced plans to expand its business in the country’s rural areas

According to a report by Kampala-based East African Business Week, Zantel has drawn up business strategies to expand its network to rural areas.

Executive management at Zantel said that the company’s investment strategy had been designed to enhance wireless communication technology, 3G, mobile broadband and Internet services networking in areas that had yet to be cover by the company.

Ali Jarsh, chief executive officer of Zantel Tanzania, was quoted in the report saying that the plan would see the company increase its 20 per cent market share in the next two years from its current seven per cent market share.

“The plan has been formulated to build on the company’s existing two million subscriber base and grow it to six million,” Jarsh said. “We have charted out strategies to make sure that we narrow the market gap with other competitors in the mobile phone industry as well as Internet services.”

In addition to the network expansion plan, Zantel Tanzania has also reduced call tariffs and offerings on Internet services.
