Ride-sharing company Uber entered a deal with telecom company Tigo Tanzania to let Tigos customers in Dar es Salaam to use the Uber app without data costs

"Uber is a strong addition to the growing range of products and services that our customers can enjoy in their daily lives,” Tigo’s managing director, Simon Karikari said.

The embattled tech company has cut a string of promotional deals with emerging market telecom companies in recent years amidst a flurry of regulatory scrutiny in developed markets.

"This partnership will encourage thousands of residents in Dar es Salaam who are Tigo customers to use the Uber app to move around Dar es Salaam," Alfred Msemo, country manager at Uber said.

Uber has partnered with India's Bharti Airtel and Zain Group in the middle east among others to attract users with discounts, free Wi-Fi, and easy payment options.

Uber on Tuesday temporarily suspended testing of its self-driving cars in the US and Canada after an autonomous car operated by the company hit and killed a woman in the US.

The incident is the first reported case of pedestrian death caused by an autonomous vehicle.
