Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal has announced a R1 billion (approx. US$60.5mn) investment in network infrastructure for the 2027 financial year, aimed at meeting rising demand for data and digital services across South Africa’s second-most populous province
The investment will support network expansion, improve connectivity and service quality, strengthen infrastructure resilience and prepare for future technologies, while advancing digital inclusion and economic development.
The capital expenditure programme will cover radio access, transmission, core network systems, power resilience and associated infrastructure. Approximately R419 million (approx. US$25.3mn) has been allocated to radio network expansion and modernisation, including new sites, LTE and 5G upgrades, wider coverage and capacity improvements across urban centres, townships and rural communities.
The deployment will extend across municipalities including eThekwini, uMzimkhulu, Msunduzi, uMvoti, uMhlathuze, Nkandla, eMsinga, iMpendle, Richmond and eDumbe, among others. By expanding coverage and increasing network capacity, Vodacom aims to improve connectivity for residents and businesses while enabling more communities to participate in the digital economy.
A further investment of more than R173 million (approx. US$10.5mn) will support transmission infrastructure, including fibre and microwave network upgrades. These improvements are intended to strengthen network resilience, enhance service quality and provide the capacity needed to accommodate increasing demand for broadband and digital services throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
Imran Khan, managing executive for Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal region, commented, "This year's R1 billion investment builds on the R1.1 billion we invested in KwaZulu-Natal last year and demonstrates our firm commitment to connecting people, communities and businesses across the province. As we continue to modernise and expand our network, we are laying the foundation for future technologies while addressing digital inequality through wider broadband access. Our goal is clear: to create a digitally inclusive KwaZulu-Natal where everyone can participate in and benefit from the opportunities of the digital economy."
Power resilience is another priority, with R63.5 million (approx. US$3.8mn) earmarked for measures to maintain network availability during electricity disruptions. These can arise from localised load reduction, cable theft, municipal infrastructure failures and maintenance work. The programme will include generators, batteries and backup power systems to help sustain connectivity during interruptions.
Alongside infrastructure development, Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal is addressing affordability barriers through products and services designed to broaden access to digital connectivity. Its simplified RED contract portfolio offers customers more data, unlimited anytime minutes and greater flexibility at competitive prices. New RED Core and SIM-only packages provide additional options to suit different connectivity requirements and budgets.
The Just4You and Just4YourTown platforms deliver personalised data and voice offers based on customer behaviour and location, helping users access connectivity at lower costs. Their growing adoption reflects demand for tailored packages among KwaZulu-Natal residents.
Vodacom’s Easy2Own device financing initiative also helps customers purchase smartphones through more affordable payment options. The programme supports the transition from 2G and 3G devices to 4G- and 5G-enabled smartphones, expanding access to digital services and related economic opportunities.
For businesses and government institutions, Vodacom Business KwaZulu-Natal is developing its role as a technology partner through an integrated digital core strategy. Its portfolio includes cloud services, cybersecurity, the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile and unified communications, hosting, managed services and digital application platforms.
One application is its Case Management solution, a citizen engagement platform that allows municipalities to record, track and resolve service-related enquiries. Several municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal already use the platform to communicate directly with residents and support more efficient service delivery.
"Our investment in KwaZulu-Natal reflects our purpose-led commitment to connecting everyone to a better future, by enabling greater digital inclusion and ensuring that all residents can access the opportunities presented by the digital economy," concluded Khan.
