East Africa, Eastern Europe, Zuku TV, project, SCPG, African, WananchiAt Discop Budapest, SCPG highlighted its recent successes with particular focus on its work on the Zuku TV project, Kenya’s first triple-play platform owned by the Wananchi Group

SCPG provided all the creative elements for the new platform including consultancy, branding, animation, promotion and training. Zuku TV provides a full line-up of channels combining original African and Western content under the Zuku Afrika, Zuku Movies, Zuku Sports and Zuku Life brands to homes in Nairobi and Mombasa.

Although the project has its roots in East Africa it has had development contributions from all over the world and is transmitted from Dublin, Ireland highlighting a fully global workflow.

The biggest challenge for SCPG was to create a brand and identity that reflects modern life in East Africa. To achieve this, a small focus group of Wananchi people was selected to provide opinions on fashion, television, advertising and culture. The main aim for a project like this is to bring the diversity of the channels and programme line-up together with a brand that encapsulates the spirit and ideals of its audience. Industry veteran Bruce Steinberg was Head Content Consultant.

He explains, “We were looking for an experienced creative agency that could get to the heart of East African culture and mix that with a Western flavour. A lot of the content on the platform is from the US and UK, particularly for the Zuku Movie and Zuku Life channels. However, Kenya has a very proud cultural background and it was extremely important that this was reflected in the design.

Collaborative experience

We are delighted with the results and are very pleased to have selected SCPG who has also been key in training the new team at Zuku TV.”

Hannelie Bekker, MD, Wananchi Programming the content division of the Wananchi Group adds, “Working with SCPG was a wonderfully collaborative, creative and rewarding experience. The challenge we put to them was to design imaging that evokes a sense of African identity without resorting to the clichéd visual language of animals and sunsets to create on air identities that would resonate with modern, middle class African audiences.

SCPG responded with distinctive and beautiful work that immediately established the freshness and quality of our fledgling channels. The on-air imaging sets the tone for each of the channels and creates a gorgeous wrapping for the programming line-ups."
