SoftBank Corp., a telecommunications and IT services company, is committed to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its corporate strategy

By addressing social issues through SDG initiatives, SoftBank aims not only to make a positive impact but also to meet the expectations of stakeholders and foster company growth.

Matsumoto, a key figure in SoftBank's SDG efforts, shares insights into the company's initiative to enhance education quality in underserved regions of Africa by providing telecommunications infrastructure from the sky.

Africa's population continues to grow, presenting opportunities for economic development. However, poverty remains a significant challenge, particularly in suburban and rural areas where access to telecommunications is limited. Matsumoto emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable business models that consider both urban and suburban areas.

SoftBank is exploring High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) technology to deliver wireless communication directly to devices in regions lacking ground-based infrastructure. This approach aims to bridge the connectivity gap in African countries, particularly those near the equator, where many impoverished communities reside.

As part of its commitment to doubling Africa's broadband penetration rate by 2025, SoftBank collaborates with organisations like Smart Africa to drive digitalization efforts. However, further technological innovation is needed to ensure stable communication services with HAPS.

In Rwanda, SoftBank's EdTech project leverages satellite communications to improve educational access and quality in schools lacking proper infrastructure. By providing communication tools and educational content, the project enables students in rural areas to receive high-quality instruction.

Addressing educational disparities between public and private schools is a priority for SoftBank. By enhancing the quality of public education, the company aims to contribute to Rwanda's long-term development.

SoftBank's SDG initiatives demonstrate its commitment to leveraging technology for social good and fostering inclusive growth in Africa and beyond.
