Virtual presenter on the Allied Telesis standHarris entered the 'channel-in-a-box fray with 'Versio' which combines baseband video, channel branding and graphics, and automated workflow capabilities in a software-based single-rack-unit device.

Hiltron’s HMCS D-SNG satellite-link monitor and control software is designed for use with D-SNG vehicles. It allows an operator to perform a complete communication system line-up within one minute. Integral auto-pointing capabilities allow a satellite feed between two ground locations to be established quickly and easily.

The HMCS includes full control of contribution encoders such as the MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Ericcson Voyager II. An integral database stores specific satellite transponder and encoding profiles. The software can also control additional customer-specified satellite communications and video equipment. Authored in Java, it is compatible with Linux, Apple OSX, and Microsoft Windows.

JVC showed its GY-HMQ10 camcorder, claimed to be world's first handheld camcorder capable of capturing and recording real-time 4K (3840 x 2160) video at 24, 50 or 60 frames per second. The GY-HMQ10 has an f/2.8 10x zoom lens and high speed 12.5 mm CMOS imager with 8.3 million active pixels capable of capturing live progressive images at up to 60 frames per second. It also records full HD (1920 x 1080) at 50/60p or 50/60i onto a single memory card in the AVCHD format.

Leader Instruments announced the availability of its new LV 7770 rasterising multi-SDI monitor. First demonstrated at NAB 2012 and now deliverable, the LV 7770 incorporates all the test and measurement features of the LV 5770 multi-SDI field monitor in a smaller unit which can be used free-standing or integrated into a studio desk.

Features include waveform, vectorscope, peak video level display, SDI/external-sync phase difference, audio, picture and data monitoring functions. Displays can be viewed at full screen size or in assignable combinations. Extensive error detection and error logging facilities are incorporated, including gamut detection and adjustable error thresholds.

Matrox Video Products Group announced MicroQuad, a four-channel SDI-to-HDMI multiviewer with a relatively low price of US$995. Users can monitor up to four SDI inputs on a single HDMI display in quadrant view or toggle to a full-screen view. Inputs can be 3G, HD or SD, and all controls are on the unit itself.

NTP Technology's new DAD AX32 analog/digital/analog audio converter allows up to 32 channels to be housed in a compact two rack-unit chassis to accommodate larger multi-microphone arrays without needing to transport a second processor.

All 32 microphone feeds can be connected back to the control room on a single Cat 5 cable via IP Ethernet. The AX32 incorporates AES/EBU and MADI inputs and outputs plus a Gigabit Ethernet IP interface for use with a Dante Virtual Soundcard for PC, Apple Mac and other Dante compatible devices. It is fully compatible with Avid’s ProTools|HDX multitrack capture/editing/mixing system. An optional microphone preamplifier is available with a claimed equivalent ultra-low noise floor of -132 decibels.

Sony also announced that its Optical Disc Archive storage system will start shipping across Europe from October. The system is designed to offer reliable long-term storage. Sony also announced that it is developing a new robotic library, the ODS-L10, comprising two drives, each with ten media cartridges.

In conclusion...

Given that 525-line and 625-line standard definition along with 720-line and 1080-line high-definition are being joined by 4K and 8K production and transmission standards, broadcasting really is heading into a resolution-independent future.

Perhaps the real money will be in making cross-converters. IBC returns to the Amsterdam RAI Centre from 13-17 September 2013, the conference again commencing on 12 September 2013.
