Mobile service provider Airtel Nigeria has announced that has plans to add an extra 2,000km to its fibre optic cable system

The cable system currently measures more than 4,000km and serves around 20mn subscribers in Nigeria.

Airtel Nigeria managing director and chief executive officer, Rajan Swaroop, said that the addition of more fibre optic cables was only the first step in a long expansion process.

“In the first phase, we will be adding about 2,000km of fibre optic cable to our network. Our efforts are paying dividends. The Nigerian Communications Commission has rated us the best in March and April of 2012 when they rated networks in Nigeria,” Swaroop said.

Swaroop noted that since Airtel had taken over the fibre optic cable system, the network capacity has been doubled and the company would be adding more cables as it tried to improve its Nigerian services and offerings.
