The number of smartphone users have more than doubled in a year in Morocco, according to a new ICT survey

According to the survey conducted by the Agence Nationale de Réglementation des Télécommunications (ANRT), 33 per cent of Moroccans between ages 12 and 65 had smartphones in 2013, compared to just 16 per cent in 2012. 

The results mean the number of smartphones in Morocco jumped from 3.6mn in 2012 to 7.4mn in 2013.

“The large increase in the share of individuals with smartphones occurred in both urban and rural areas,” said ANRT’s report.

Morocco has a population of 32.5mn people, according to the World Bank. Usage of mobile applications have also doubled in the country, stated the report. More than 27 per cent of individuals equipped with smartphones used a mobile application in 2013 whereas only 12 per cent did so in 2012. 

Other results in the survey show that usage of mobile applications is at 34 per cent in urban areas and nine per cent in rural areas.
