Over the first half of 2013 the number of subscribers increased 6.5 per cent to 201.5mn in the 22 countries the company operates in across Africa and the Middle East.

The company has more than 30mn smart phones in use and said that it would aim to continue to increase smart phone penetration across the regions it operates in.

“We believe MTN is now ready for the next frontier of growth - digital services. And we are humbled that more than 200mn of our subscribers are embarking on this journey with us, to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world," said Dabengwa.

Data services contributed most to its revenue growth, with South Africa and Nigeria the biggest contributors to data revenue growth, while those in Ghana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Benin also delivered a strong performance.

The MTN Mobile Money and financial services has continued to gain traction in existing and new markets and had almost 12.1mn users at the end of June 2013, representing a year-on-year increase of 64 per cent.
