Brand equity database BrandZ has named telecommunications provider MTN Group as Africa’s most valuable brand
MTN was ranked in 88th spot in BrandZ’s Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2012 survey, becoming the first and only African brand to make the list.
More than 150,000 people around the world were surveyed for the list, which was developed by research agency Millward Brown Optimor. It is the only brand rankings to include consumer data as a component element in arriving at the brand value.
MTN Group executive for marketing Jennifer Roberti said, “The listing is not only an appreciation of the socio-economic impact mobile telephony through MTN has on the continent, but also signifies the growth of our brand over the years.
“We are grateful to our employees for their ‘can do’ attitude and to our customers for their support. This accolade further inspires us to continue exploring innovative ways to offer them more value in their MTN simcards,” she added.
MTN has become synonymous with several sporting sponsorship opportunities across Africa and beyond, including its sponsorship of current African football champions Zambia and UEFA Champions League giant-killers Apoel FC of Cyprus.
The company also sponsors four teams in South Africa’s professional football league, the football league in Swaziland, the Ghanaian FA Cup, and is a broadcast sponsor of the English, German and Spanish leagues on key sports channels across the continent.
MTN’s name also appears attached to several music properties, including South Africa’s premier music awards, the MTN Bushfire Festival in Swaziland and MTN Project Fame West Africa.
