The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (Rura) has started a drive to get Rwandans living in the diaspora to register their roaming SIM cards online

The project is targeting MTN Rwanda subscribers as it is the only local network that has roaming SIM cards, according to RURA.

"The move comes as a response to a request by the diaspora to have their SIM cards registered by the regulatory body without necessarily coming back home," Francois Regis Gatarahiya, Rura director general, was quoted as saying by Rwanda's New Times. "Our people will be able to register their SIM cards using the online registration forms on the MTN website."

Rura and the telecoms companies are working together to ensure that all subscribers are registered by the July 31 deadline.

The SIM card registration drive aims to get Rwanda's 6.2mn MTN, Airtel and Tigo subscribers registered. Any SIM cards not registered by the deadline will be deactivated.

Rura previously reported that 78 per cent of the targeted subscribers had registered their SIM cards by mid-June.
