UK Trade & Investment will be supporting a wide range of companies targeting the African continent at the upcoming Mobile World Congress

The congress takes place in Barcelona, Spain, at the end of February and the beginning of March 2012, and UK Trade & Investment will be supporting the following companies, amongst others.

Datawind offers to tackle the digital divide through the manufacture, distribution and sale of low-cost personal computers - costing US$35 each, these seven-inch devices enable Internet access and phone functionality in developing markets. Notably, Datawind claims its device increases the speed of content delivery by a factor of 30.

Mediaburst offers Florence, a simple, SMS-based healthcare system used to record and deliver patients' vital signs to a service that records and plots the information, and issues reminders to patients. Information is accessible via smartphones or the Web.

PowerOasis provides power management software to mobile network operators in emerging markets - to support power management on-grid and off-grid. PowerOasis claims to reduce diesel consumption and so the running costs of generator-powered base stations.

Revector specialises in network fraud prevention. Its solution, Locate & Eliminate, enables mobile network operators to pinpoint a specific building or location from where SIM Box/Gateway fraud originates.

Sequoia has developed a GPRS printer and gateway system that enables centrally-located labs to transmit the HIV test results of new-born babies, using any mobile phone, to rural clinics in sub-Saharan Africa.

Wood & Douglas has developed a Portable All-terrain Wireless System (PAWS), an advanced long-range wireless voice, video and data transmission system, to be placed on search and rescue dogs. The dog's view is transmitted via Wi-Fi to a human operator using a smartphone or tablet.
