Airtel Africa has partnered with Samsung and Singtel to launch an app development competition

The challenge will see participants from Africa and Asia design and build consumer-centric mobile apps that will leverage on mobile network services, such as mobile, data, carrier billing, location and SMS, with the winner taking home US$1,000 and a place on a startup mentorship.

The deadline for application submissions is 5 September 2015, after which, two African winners will be chosen to take part in the Startup Mentorship Program in Singapore in October, with the overall winners to be announced in November this year and expected to commence assignment with the Airtel/ Singtel group of companies in 2016.

“This initiative is a great opportunity for developers in Africa to come up with innovative mobile apps that directly touch individual consumer’s needs,” said Airtel Africa CEO Christian de Faria. “We hope to partner with like-minded individuals who will come forward and work together with us to come up with apps that will help us deliver the best smartphone experience for customers.”

Airtel and its partners said the challenge reiterated their commitment to nurturing youth potential, adding that they hoped the competition would uncover the ‘next big app developers’.
