Digital currency start-up BitPesa has launched an international remittance service for Tanzania

The service allows customers to send money to Tanzania from other countries by exchanging currency for Bitcoin.

BitPesa aims to target the growing number of Tanzanians working abroad, particularly within the East African Community (EAC) nations, where restrictions on work and travel are limited.

“Anyone from anywhere looking to transact with someone in Tanzania can now do so using Bitpesa,” said a statement from the company, adding that customers “can now make a payment to any Tanzanian mobile money number instantly from anywhere in the world for a three per cent fee.”

BitPesa has been operating the same service for Kenya for a year and a half since its launch in November 2014, and has expressed a hope to expand further across Africa.

Mobile money services are more popular in Africa than anywhere in the world, according to a recent survey by the World Bank, with twelve per cent of adults owning a mobile account, compared to the global average of just two per cent.
