South African telecommunications firm MTN Group has said that it will continue its search for merger-and-acquisition (M&A) opportunities across the continent, according to The Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch newswire
MTN chief executive Sifiso Dabengwa said the company would “aggressively” compete in Ethiopia if the country’s government offered another license for a second operator and also cited Angola as another country of interest for the firm.
Sourcing M&A opportunities would remain a “priority” for the company said Dabengwa, with markets across Africa and the Middle East of particular interest.
Dabengwa said that MTN was currently locked in discussions with potential M&A targets north of the Maghreb, but added that the company was not interested in opportunities in the South America or Pacific markets at this time.
