Rwanda has been ranked the top East African Community (EAC) member in terms of ICT readiness in a report compiled from information in the Networked Readiness Index

The report entitled Living in the Hyper-connected World assessed 142 countries globally and ranked Rwanda at 82nd globally – 11 places ahead of Kenya in 93rd.

The report noted that there was low-ICT readiness in Sub-Saharan Africa due to insufficient development of ICT infrastructure and high costs.

Meanwhile, the Rwanda Development Company (RDB) has signed a US$6.7 million contract with the Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) to supply the Rwandan government with 1.244 Gbps of internet bandwidth over the next 10 years.

TTCL will provide part of the capacity later this month and the rest within the next six months.

Bharti Airtel also recently announced that it will launch operations in Rwanda expanding it network across the continent and is expected to invest more than $100 million in Rwanda over the next three years.

Bharti said that the country was an “extremely promising” market and that the launch would strengthen its footprint across the African continent.
