Airtel Zambia will invest US$233mn on upgrading its current towers and increasing the number of 3.75G sites in the country

According to a company source, Airtel will invest a further US$58mn to increase its number of sites in Chongwe District, which was expected to increase the number of subscribers in the area.

Airtel managing director Fayaz King said, “We are facing a lot of challenges as the company is seeing a huge growth in the number of subscribers over the past years, but we are determined to meet the challenge."

According to The Times of Zambia, King said the investments were a result of demand caused by an increase in the number of Airtel customers in Zambia and the growing need to upgrade the sites.

He also revealed that Airtel Zambia was struggling with the increasing network capacity as the necessary resources were not always readily available.

“Airtel currently had more than 70,000 people connected to the Airtel network in Chongwe and that the number of Airtel subscribers was expected to double once the number of sites were increased,” The Times of Zambia concluded.
