EMPEA Selected as Strategic Data Partner for Emerging Markets PE Data for Global Research InitiativeEMPEA Selected as Strategic Data Partner for Emerging Markets PE Data for Global Research Initiative
The Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) and the Private Capital Research Institute (PCRI) announced today that EMPEA has been selected as a Strategic Data Partner and emerging markets private capital data provider for the PCRI global research initiative, led by Harvard Business School Professor Josh Lerner. The PCRI aims to facilitate high quality academic research on the nature and impact of private capital in the global economy.
Professor Lerner commented: “EMPEA is a leading source of global emerging markets data and is also an important partner in building greater understanding about the impact of private equity across markets. We welcome EMPEA’s support of our efforts to create more transparency around private capital and its role in the global economy.”
Regulatory developments
“EMPEA is proud to be a partner in this initiative, which we see as vital to a more informed discourse about private equity globally,” said Sarah Alexander, President and CEO of EMPEA. “Several recent regulatory developments reveal that understanding of private equity and its impact are mixed at best and based on inadequate representations at worst. The global database being constructed by the PCRI, and the rigorous academic research coming out of that work, will yield a crucial fact base for more informed decision making by policy makers and investors. This is especially pivotal in emerging economies, where this capital holds tremendous potential to play a uniquely catalytic role in economic development.”
The PCRI, with funding from the Kauffman Foundation, a non-profit foundation based in Kansas City focused on entrepreneurship, is constructing a comprehensive, centralized database of global private capital activity accessible to academics under controlled circumstances, i.e., in aggregate form at a fixed location and for use only in pre-approved research studies. The PCRI, in collaboration with The Brookings Institute, an independent non-profit public policy organization based in Washington, D.C., will disseminate resulting findings to industry experts, policy makers and the public at large. The initiative has the support of the Institutional Limited Partners Association, as well as a number of global private equity firms.
