Telecom operators can now reduce their energy costs with a holistic, managed approach to energy use spanning network design, energy procurement, the use of renewable energy and power systems monitoring. Nokia Siemens Networks has introduced Managed Energy Services to further enhance its End-to-End Energy Solutions to help operators ensure constant network availability and achieve environmental targets while reducing their overall energy costs.

“As operators expand their networks, especially in rural and remote areas, they are faced with the dual challenges of dealing with rising energy costs and minimizing their carbon footprint,” said Armando Almeida, head of Global Services, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our End-to-End Energy Solutions provide a comprehensive approach to reduce energy consumption in operators’ networks, which accounts for 86 percent of the total energy consumed by a typical mobile operator, or 10-30 percent of network operating costs**.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Managed Energy Services strengthens its End-to-End Energy Solutions portfolio introduced in November 2009. The enhanced approach to energy efficiency not only offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, solutions and multi-vendor services that can reduce the energy consumption of operators’ sites and networks, but also manage their entire ‘Energy Estate’ encompassing the operators’ entire energy use. Energy savings are achieved through the deployment of a series of performance metrics such as the use of smart-metering, and centralized and remote monitoring of all power sources (including grid, battery, generator and renewable energy systems), as well as corrective and preventive site maintenance.

Remote management of energy with Nokia Siemens Networks’ green energy control ensures optimal use of field resources for preventive and corrective maintenance. Managed Energy Services provides efficiency in energy management by optimizing energy consumption and energy production (to provide connectivity in rural and remote areas).

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Smart Procurement proposition covers the entire energy procurement chain, from the purchasing process, the identification of greener energy sources, the relationship between use of energy and invoicing, detailed tariff studies to the final payment process to utility companies. Through detailed analyses, Nokia Siemens Networks offers customers advice and recommendations on paying for the actual energy consumption or switching tariffs or energy service providers to reduce their energy bills.

With rising concerns about energy costs and global warming, efficient energy management is increasingly being supported by governments, banks and financial institutions through measures such as incentives and subsidies based on operators’ energy saving initiatives. Nokia Siemens Networks offers collaborative consultancy and facilitation services on areas of tax and other financial incentives, green credits, grants or preferential interest rates that can help operators either offset their operational expenditure or underwrite investments in energy savings.

“Operators today are constantly working to keep pace with the changing and growing subscriber expectations. Having the right partner to manage their entire Energy Estates not only help operators improve their network quality and operational efficiency by reducing the energy costs, but also allow them to focus their resources on business critical activities such as launching of new services,” said Rohit Kumar, head of Energy Solutions at Nokia Siemens Networks.
