Mozambiques mobile operator Movitel has won the Best Mobile Innovation Award at the Mobile Innovations Awards 2014 that was recently held in London

Movitel – a joint venture (JV) between Vietnamese telecom group Viettel and Mozambique’s SPI company – beat contenders like PayPal, IMIMobile, Vodafone, TSYS and Ericsson to win the award for presenting the most innovative solution to popularise telecom services in Mozambique, according to reports.

The solution stems from the belief that telecommunications is a commodity that everyone needs, regardless of their location or income, stated Movitel. The company has built a vast network infrastructure of 2,800 towers, 25,000 km of fibre optical cable and a widespread supply chain to every village with 153 shops and 12,600 agents.

With this award, Movitel has become the first and only African operator to win three awards consecutively – the company won the Rural Telecom Award of the AfricaCom Awards in 2012 and the Competitive Strategy Leadership award by the American research and consulting firm Frost and Sullivan in 2013.
