Econet Zimbabwe has launched Ecocash, the first mobile money transfer service in Zimbabwe

Econet CEO, Douglas Mboweni says with the penetration of mobile phones at more than 70 per cent, mobile money transfer has become the first choice in sending and receiving money. He says mobile money transfer is not new to Africa.The service was first introduced in Kenya in 2007. The product now claims over 14mn users in Kenya.


Mboweni says studies prove that more than 10 per cent of Kenya's GDP now passes through the mobile banking service.


He says in Zimbabwe, ecocash is expected to bring the convinience of banking via mobile technology to millions of Zimbabweans with no access to banking services.
