Cell C has extended its 99 cents per minute, on per second billing call tariff to France, Ireland, the Netherlands and US Virgin Islands

This brings the list of countries on the South African mobile operator's 99 cents anytime tariff to 38.

"Since we launched our 99 cents international rate, call volumes to the participating countries have increased drastically. In one case, we have seen call traffic increased by more than 2,000 per cent," said Cell C chief executive officer Alan Knott-Craig.

The 99 cents tariff, which will be effective from July 19, has been set as the default rate for all the 38 countries on prepaid and contract packages.

"Our negotiations with international operators continue to ensure we can offer a rate that is compelling and transparent. All calls are billed on a per second basis so you only pay for the time you spend on a call," Knott-Craig added.

According to Cell C, the international calls were not VoIP calls, but pure circuit-switched calls, ensuring the best quality possible.

As the call traffic to the countries increased above expectations, the company stated that it decided to make the 99 cents per minute call rate a permanent tariff on its network rather than a promotional one.
